The technology employs the ringopeningpolymerization process of glycolide (GL). However,traditional GL synthesis by bulk depolymerization ofglycolic acid oligomer has shown industrial limitation. Ourinnovation, which utilizes a new solvent for GL synthesis,resolves past yield and purity deficiencies allowing ascalable production method.Furthermore, in the production of high molecular weightPGA, the sequential melt-solid polymerization methodof very high purity GL was invented. This method wassuitable for the production of a well defined polymer.Besides well known PGA as biodegradable polymeruses for sutures and medical devices, several new valueaddedindustrial applications have been identified thatexploit the very high mechanical strength, gas barrier,and degradation properties.
