The attitudeleads me to work actively. At the same time, I easily strikea compromise on encountering a difficulty. If this goes on, Icannot achieve growth or make a discovery. I might haveto take an uncompromising stance.Smart hydrogels are a most interesting class of‘softpolymer’with high water content, the ability to swellrapidly and excellent biocompatibility. These hydrogelmaterials have found important applications in thebiomedical domain. In this review paper, we will provideup-to-date research concerning the development of theseresponsive hydrogel materials for biosensor applications.We will focus on studies of photonic crystal hydrogels, inwhich the hydrogel materials were married with orderednanostructures. Examples of photonic crystal hydrogelsfor sensing various types of analytes will be presented.Prospects for the future development of these remarkablehydrogel materials will also be presented.
