Hot TopicsThe Most Frequently Accessed Papers Published in Polymer Journal for 3 months from April to June in 2013Supramolecular Polymerization of Rim-to-RimConnected BisresorcinareneTakeharu HAINOGraduate School of Science, Hiroshima UniversityE-mail: haino@hiroshima-u.ac.jpA resorcinarene indirectlyassembles into a homodimericcapsule held together by multiplehydrogen bonds with eight alcoholmolecules. A bisresorcinarene, which is connected rim-to-rim,should be a beneficial platform forthe synthesis of supramolecularpolymers, because its homoditopicnature promotes the iterativedimerization of the resorcinarenemoieties via multiple hydrogenbondsand the complexation of smallguests [Org. Lett., 14, 4510 (2012)].The supramolecular polymerizationof the bisresorcinarene wasobserved in the presence of ethanolwith toluene as a co-solvent. Thefibrillar morphologies clearlyindicate the anisotropic growthof the polymeric assemblies. Bycontrast, chloroform enhanced thegrowth of microcrystals, whereasthe absence of co-solvents gaverise to particles with an amorphousmorphology. Thus, the presenceof co-solvents obviously influencedthe supramolecular polymerization.Judging from the molecular volume, toluene is a good guest for thedimeric capsule. The encapsulationof a toluene molecule within thedimeric capsule most likely causesenough stabilization to facilitate thesupramolecular polymerization.Polymer Journal, 45, 363 (2013)Self-Organized Polymer Photonic Crystals for LaserDevicesSeiichi FURUMINational Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and Nanosystemsand Emergent Functions, PRESTO, Japan Science and TechnologyAgency (JST)E-mail: FURUMI.Seiichi@nims.go.jpThis article highlights anoverview of recent developmentsin fabrication and uses of selforganizedpolymer photonic crystals(PCs), such as chiral liquid crystals(CLCs) and colloidal crystals (CCs),for laser applications. Both CLCsand CCs have intrinsic capabilitiesto spontaneously organize 1D-PCand 3D-PC structures, respectively. When light-emitting dyes are addedin the PCs, the laser action can begenerated by optical excitation. This article describes not only theresearch backgrounds of CLCsand CCs as PCs, but also theexperimental results of their softand tunable lasers. For instance, wecan generate the optically-excitedlaser action even though the devicebecomes bent shape by mechanicalstress (see figure). We believe thatsuch self-organized polymer PCswill play leading roles in the nextgenerationoptoelectronics.Polymer Journal, 45, 579 (2013)Site-Specific Alignment of Gold Nanoparticles guidedwith Thermo-Responsive Elastin-Like PeptidesNobuyuki HIGASHI*, Takayuki OCHIAI, Chie KANAZAWA, andTomoyuki KOGADepartment of Molecular Chemistry and Biochemistry, Faculty ofScience and Engineering, Doshisha UniversityE-mail: nhigashi@mail.doshisha.ac.jp*Elastin is one of the most importantclasses of naturally occurringstructural proteins. Elastinlikepeptides (ELP) have beensynthesized both chemically andrecombinantly and exhibit areversible hydrophilic-hydrophobicphase transition in response totemperature changes. We proposeherein an effective and facile methodfor preparing self-assembled goldnanoparticle (AuNP) arrays guidedwith the ELP. ELP-coated AuNPswere successfully prepared and thephase transition of the ELP shellcaused an aggregation of AuNPs,accompanied by a drastic colorchange of the solution. Using thehydrophobic character of the ELP-AuNP, it was selectively alignedonto the micro-patterned polystyrenestripes. This method is based on oneof the functions of ELP as a“smart”peptide: the concept is simple andmust be applicable to organizationof other metal NPs and biorelatednano-materials.Polymer Journal, 45, 523 (2013)高分子62巻11月号(2013年)c2013 The Society of Polymer Science, Japan661
