COVER STORY
Memory of Shape
Polymers which can memorize their previous shape are commonly known as “shape memory polymers”. Generally shape memory polymer means that mechanically deformed polymer resins can return to the original shape by only heating. However this issue deals with a broader definition of the term shape memory polymer. We will cover polymer materials that can store their previous shape and return to the previous form by a wider range of external stimuli such as heating, light, additives, and so on. Within this issue, we focus on applications and mechanisms of shape memory polymers, and we highlight active research areas of shape memory polymers as a smart material.
