COVER STORY Plant Biotechnology and Polymer Science: From Biomass-Based Materials to Polymer-Based Plant Science |
Plants and their tissues are composite materials of various biopolymers, which highlight an interesting relationship between plant and polymer sciences. Currently, many research groups study the functional utilization of cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose as biomass-based and eco-friendly polymers. In addition, polymer science has been applied to conquer plant biology as well as to develop the next-generation plant biotechnology. Plant-related science has the potential to induce a breakthrough in a variety of polymer fields including not only polymer physics but also polymer chemistry, due to its totally different culture and concepts. In this issue, scientists in both plant and polymer fields demonstrate and summarize their outstanding interdisciplinary research. The editorial members hope that all the SPSJ members will conceive new ideas in their research by plants.
