COVER STORY An Evolving Supramolecular Polymer |
Supramolecules, which are formed by weak noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions, have realized formation of various complex structures. Rational design of versatile building block ‘monomers’ makes it possible to construct a supramolecular polymer via continuous noncovalent interactions. Since early reports of supramolecular polymers as a type of pseudo polymer in late 1980’s, a variety of supramolecular polymers have been synthesized through the design of a variety of ‘monomers’. Recently, innovative results have been reported from Japanese research groups; e.g., supramolecular ‘living’ polymerization utilizing a kinetic trap and ‘chain-growth’ supramolecular polymerization using an ‘initiator’. In this month, we focus on these attractive supramolecular polymers.
