COVER STORY Internet of Polymers: New Paradigm from IoT to IoP |
The Internet of Things (IoT) shows rapid progress as a fundamental technology to take us to the next-generation information industry. All living things including we human beings are an integrated and orchestrated materials complex composed of proteins, nucleic acids and carbohydrates as intelligent macromolecules that shows excellent functions such as information processing, material conversion and material transportation. Which is to say, living things themselves can be considered to be an “Internet of Polymers (IoP)”, which are connected within each other via microscopic and macroscopic networks. In this special feature, we will focus on recent challenging research to realize the IoP based on polymer chemistry by developing synthetic or biological polymers with functions such as information processing and networking.
