COVER STORY Clever Polymers |
In recent years, the development of functional polymers designed to rapidly change their microstructure in response to changes in the surrounding environment has been actively pursued. These polymers are called by various names, such as smart polymers, intelligent polymers, and stimuli (environmental) responsive polymers, but these polymers all work “cleverly”. Macroscopic changes in macromolecules caused by external stimuli such as heat, pH, ionic strength, magnetism, electric, light, ultrasound, and chemical species are reversible. It is possible to take a unique structure and state depending on the type and intensity of the external stimuli. They are expected to be used in various applications, for example, drug delivery, tissue engineering, medical treatment, sensing, separation, purification, and mechanical engineering. This special issue focuses on the clever behavior of these polymers built by designing materials and devising interfaces. The latest research and practical examples that have received special attention in various bio-related fields are introduced. Editors: YAMAGUCHI, IWASAKI, SHIKINAKA, and MASHITA |
