COVER STORY Polymers in the Marine Environment |
Marine pollution by plastic waste is being recognized as an emerging global environmental issues, because small fragments of plastic termed “microplastics” that exist in the environment are widely confirmed all over the world. Plastic waste gradually yield plastic debris in the ocean, but their breakdown process and their fate are still unknown. Social demands toward a circular economy are also promoting not only the development of bio-/marine-degradable polymers but also the study on breakdown behavior of plastic waste in the marine environment. In this special issue, we will feature recent trends and challenges that marine environmental scientists and polymer scientists are tackling against the marine environmental issue of microplastics! Editors: HAYANO, IWASAKI, SHIKINAKA, SUGA, SUGIYASU, and MATSUOKA |
