Power of Ladder Structure: Two Bonds Are Mightier Than One Bond
Ladder polymers, in which the monomer units are connected by more than two bonds, often exhibit considerably different properties than ordinary polymers consisting of single bonds. It is well-known that pi-conjugated ladder polymers exhibit excellent optical, electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties, and conformationally rigid non-conjugated ladder polymers exhibit considerably high microporosity and gas permselectivity. Interestingly, natural products with high biological activity often contain a large ladder skeleton. However, the synthesis of ladder-shaped molecules and polymers is still difficult due to the lack of highly selective and efficient reactions that can form two or more chemical bonds. Therefore, the development of new reactions and methods for the synthesis of ladder polymers is still a big challenge along with the investigation of properties of ladder polymers. This issue features a wide range of topics, –from recent advances in ladder polymer synthesis and properties, to ladder-type natural products–, providing an introduction to the fascinating world of ladder-shaped molecules and polymers.
