COVER STORY
Baby Polymers
New technologies for secure and effective child-raising are important for a sustainable development of humans in the situation that a declining birthrate and an aging population are growing as a serious problem in many countries in the world. Many kinds of polymer materials are used for baby goods. Disposable diapers, which utilize high water-absorption polymer resin, have brought dramatic changes in the way of raising babies. The materials for better daily commodities such as nursing bottles and fabrics that are gentle for delicate baby skins are also in demand. Development of new and advanced medical materials is also an important issue. For example, soft materials that stretch along with the fast growing up children is used for medical devices embedded in the body and contributes to the reduction of the number of surgeries. In this feature article, the forefront of research and development of “Baby Polymers” will be presented.
