COVER STORY Polymers for Building the Future Network Society |
High-definition televisions, smartphones, tablet PCs, high image quality digital
cameras and high-resolution video cameras are widely used, and we can
easily enjoy beautiful pictures. These tools, created by information
technology (IT), can reveal their full value with a connection to a broadband
communication network. We feel their future potential when we use video
communication on a smartphone over the internet. It has the potential
to satisfy human's desire for limitless interaction. However, to realize
“real communication” as if we meet face-to-face by telecommunications systems, technologies of communication
devices, displays, and data storage are only starting successfully and
further contribution is still required from polymer science and technology.
Evolution from IT to information and communication technology (ICT) is
steadily advancing. We are now facing the start of an era when we can
vividly communicate by high image quality pictures. In the present edition,
we look into the future brought by ICT and introduce polymers that contribute
effectively to improve future communication, displays and data storages,
and so on. (Editors : TAGAYA, IYODA,
K. TANAKA, and NAKAGAWA) |
