COVER STORY Self-Healing Materials: Recent Development and Application |
Self-healing materials, which are inspired by biological systems that have the ability to heal after being wounded, have found considerable interest as smart materials that show the capability to repair mechanical damages and cracks caused by long-term usage without the need for repairing processes. Their key potential benefits are the prolonging the service life of products, minimizing the cost of production due to overcoming repair damages, and durability under extreme conditions such as space and deep sea that humans cannot handle easily. For these developments, a wide range of approaches have been reported from fundamental understanding for self-healing to new practical processes for industrial applications such as coatings and preservation of mechanical strength. This special issue covers recent development of self-healing materials from the viewpoints of polymer chemistry, polymer engineering and supramolecular chemistry. (Editors: SADA, KANG, and H. YOSHIDA) |
