COVER STORY Catalysts in Polymer Science: A Key to New Catalysis |
Starting with Ziegler-Natta catalysts for coordination olefin polymerization, literally thousands of metal catalysts have been developed and in turn led to novel polymerization methodologies, as symbolized, for example, by ring-opening metathesis and living radical polymerizations. Equally important, these developments in fact inspired the interdisciplinary research and the synergy between polymer science and organometallic chemistry or other related fields. Such a history vividly tells us about the importance of “catalysts” in polymer science. This lesson is still with us, and in recent years we are now witnessing emergence of new generations of catalysts, “organocatalysts” in particular, which do not rely on metals but uniquely catalyze polymerization and would be related to enzymes in our body or in nature. >From this viewpoint, polymers designed for catalysts or catalyst ligands will also be important in the future. This issue thus focuses on “catalysts in polymer science”, featuring new trends in catalyst-related research: advanced catalysts for polymerization, polymer catalysts, enzyme-like catalysts, etc. Editors: OUCHI, ASANUMA, KIDA, and NISHIHARA |
