COVER STORY Why Not Re-Consider About Fracture of Polymeric Materials |
Advanced functionalized polymeric materials are increasingly being developed and they are now being employed extensively in engineering applications. These advance polymer materials are fascinating at many levels but their increased functionality must not be at the cost of reduced mechanical strength or chemical and thermal stability. A large wealth of applied fracture mechanics studies were undertaken between 1953 and 2000, but in more recent times there have not been many significant breakthroughs reported in the literature. This position is changing now though with the advent of new methods for toughening elastomer materials for example by exploiting sliding-ring functionality or double network gels. In this edition, fracture mechanics in polymeric materials is reviewed and updated activities will be introduced. Editors: TSUNODA, SAKAI, SHISHIDO, and FURUKAWA |
