COVER STORY
Polymers! Run into the Future!
In these days, polymers are used 30 % by volume and 10 % by weight in automobiles, for applications such as tires, bumpers, front panels, even parts in engines. Especially, for ecological, economical, and design purposes, polymers are one of the key materials due to their lightness and easy processible properties.
From 2015 onwards, a big project, ImPACT, initiated by the Cabinet Office of the Japanese government starts in polymer science and engineering fields. The aims are development of “flexible and tough” polymers and ultimately safe and energy saving cars. In this issue, we focus on this big project for developing new cars by gathering polymer science and engineering research groups from universities, national laboratories, and companies.
