COVER STORY Structural Protein: Near & Dear Future Structural Material |
Structural proteins are biological components to organize tissue and maintain the cellular shape and sizes. In our life, there are so many types of structural proteins, such as, spider silk, silkworm silk, collagen, keratin, resilin and elastin. Although some of them show outstanding physical properties that cannot be achieved by synthetic polymers, the application of those structural proteins as structural materials for practical uses has not been realized until now. In this issue, the basic and applied studies on structural proteins are introduced and summarized with respect to synthesis, material design and structure-function relationship. Editors: NUMATA, UOZU, UNEYAMA, and YOSHIMOTO |
