COVER STORY Carbon Polymers |
Carbon polymers consisting solely of carbon atoms have long been used for electrode and simple structural materials because of their high thermal and mechanical stability and good conductivity. They were produced by calcination of carbon source polymers such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and phenolic resins. Their main target were basic and mechanic material applications, thus their structures were unclear. However, the discovery of nanocarbons with very specific structural features such as carbon nanotubes and graphenes triggered investigations on the directed synthesis of certain carbon polymers based on diverse organic and polymer synthetic approaches. This special feature introduces the latest research examples of carbon polymers with tailored structures. Editors: OGOSHI, UEMURA, SUGIYASU, and NAKANO |
