Single-Molecule Spectroscopy: A New Window to the Nanoworld of Polymers
Recent progress in nanoscience and nanotechnology requires new techniques for the characterization of polymer nanoscale structures and properties. Single-molecule optical detection and spectroscopy has recently emerged as an excellent tool for nanoscale material characterization. Measuring light emitted by individual molecules reveals static and dynamic heterogeneities in polymers, and provides new insight into polymer structure, dynamics and photophysics.
This special issue introduces applications of single-molecule spectroscopy to a wide range of physical phenomena and chemical processes occurring on both synthetic and natural polymers, including chain conformations, monitoring of polymerization reactions, dynamics near glass transition, photophysics of conjugated polymers, optical and electrical properties of DNA and polypeptides. Hopefully, this special issue will reveal the potential of the method and serve as a catalyst for its further spread.
