COVER STORY Fusion of Metals and Organic Materials |
Metals and organic materials are produced through quite
different raw materials, synthetic conditions, and fabrication processes. They have developed as different research fields for a long time because the analytical methods and the requested physical properties are greatly different. However, the recent development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, which realizes both nanofabrication of materials and minute observation, enables the precise fusion of metals and organic materials. Stabilization of metal clusters by organic matters and fine synthesis of organic materials in metallic nano-molds are the representative examples. Unique functions that cannot be achieved using the conventional materials are now expected in the new materials. This feature introduces state-of-the-art research in this fusion of very different chemistry areas and searches for the directionality of the future and possibilities for application and practical use.
