Polymer for and in Confined Space
The design of “confined spaces” where molecular events occur is essential for many important functions such as recognition, separation, adsorption, and chiral induction. Macrocyclic compounds, including crown ethers, calixarenes, and cyclodextrins, have been used to construct supramolecular systems by taking advantage of their abilities to capture metal ions and small molecules. In the last decade, molecularly engineered crystalline and soft materials, featuring a higher structural complexity and a larger free space, have emerged, providing new applications involving not only single molecules but also polymeric macromolecules. This issue sheds light on recent topics and future perspectives regarding “polymer for and in confined space” for innovative functions.
