COVER STORY REVOLUTION IN MOLECULAR TRIBOLOGY: Lubricant Polymers and Interface Analysis |
Lubricating oil has been used to suppress the friction between the surfaces. When the oil molecules are sandwiched between two moving surfaces, they repeat deformation, diffusion and other phase transition with receiving shear stress in confined space. If the separation between two moving surfaces is reduced to a molecular dimension, the bulk fluid begins to express the personality of molecules. Materials scientists record new breath on such tribological issues that the researcher of the field of mechanical engineering continued having for a long time. In this feature articles, we introduce recent achievements established by polymer scientists on tribology, and analytical technologies of the materials surface. Editors: HISADA, KOJIO, and H. YOSHIDA |
