COVER STORY Synthesizing “Life” with Macromolecules |
Recently, a new scientific field named “synthetic biology” is emerging, which is aiming at a de-novo design of biological systems in test tube from natural macromolecules by extracting necessary components. In this new field, life systems are re-designed purposefully and are synthesized by re-programming their single components as if we design new molecules and chemically synthesize them. The new concept in synthetic biology is now merging naturally occurring macromolecules and artificial ones to create “artificial life forms” as a new system. Someday, development of this field may give us some answers for compelling questions towards the choice of biomolecules, such as why genetic alphabets are converged to only four bases, and why proteins are composed of twenty amino acids. In this special issue, recent progress in this new field is introduced by focusing on the design of artificial cells and model systems of life phenomena.
